Welcome Back to School – Brookeland ISD

We are off to a great start to our new school year in Brookeland ISD. Thanks to all of our community for your patience as we worked through the challenges of Tropical Storm Harvey in our district. The combination of flooded and hazardous roadways, power outages and fuel shortages in the district forced us to delay our start until Tuesday, September 5th. Our primary focus during the days preceding school was the safety of our students and faculty. As districts throughout Southeast Texas begin their school year, please keep all of the students and families affected by the storm locally and across the state in your thoughts and prayers.

Brookeland ISD offers students Dual Credit courses for college credit hours, UIL Academics, UIL Athletics, and numerous campus clubs / organizations. Through our Career Technology course pathways, the district offers several Certificates of Completion for our future graduates, with over 100 BISD students in the following programs this year, including:

OSHA - 10 and 5 Hour Courses          Food Sciences - ServSafe

Construction Trades - NCCER           Health Services - CPR

Child Development - Child Care / Guidance

Overseeing daily operations at the campus level are our district administrators – Principal, Charlotte Odom; Counselor, Stacy Gillis; and Assistant Principal, Ashley Powell. Mrs. Odom, Mr. Gillis, and Mrs. Powell have diligently prepared for the upcoming school year, and we look forward to their collaborative efforts with our students and faculty this year.

In the 2017 Accountability Ratings issued by the Texas Education Agency, our overall District, High School and Elementary campus ratings “Met Standards”, the highest rating to be attained, in all four performance indexes. These categories include: Index 1 - Student Achievement, Index 2: Student Progress, Index 3: Closing Student Performance Gaps, and Index 4: Postsecondary Readiness. Districts across the state must structure the academic curriculum on each campus in a manner that addresses each of the four indexes. Districts are held accountable for student academic performance in comparison to other districts.

Additionally, in 2017 our district received multiple acknowledgements of outstanding academic achievement. As a campus, Brookeland High School was recognized for Distinction Designations in three categories; Science, Top 25 Percent Closing Student Performance Gaps, and Postsecondary Readiness. Postsecondary Readiness is the only distinction possible at the district level under the state accountability system, and Brookeland ISD is one of 58 districts out of over 1,200 school districts and charter schools across the state to receive this distinction from the Texas Education Agency. We were one of only two districts out of 40 Region 5 / Southeast Texas districts to achieve recognition for Postsecondary Readiness. Postsecondary Readiness evaluates a combination of graduation rates, ACT/SAT participation and performance, Career and Technology Education (CTE) graduates, and Dual Credit college course completion rates. Congratulations to our faculty and students in this exceptional accomplishment.

During our August budget meetings, School Board members, Administrators, and Business Office personnel reviewed budget trends and the effects of tax rates on revenue projections and expenditures for our district. During our meeting to adopt the tax rate and budget for the current school year, the Board of Trustees adopted a tax rate of $1.04, the same tax rate that was for the past several years. In addition, Brookeland ISD received a “FIRST” (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas) rating from the Texas Education Agency for financial management of “Passing”, with a maximum attainable score.

With a combination of excellent student academic performance across the district, a school tax rate of $1.04, and a solid district financial rating, Brookeland ISD is well prepared to meet the needs of all students for the near and foreseeable future. Our district will strive to adopt a balanced budget each year, while providing exemplary programs for our students at all grade levels. The district will continue the processes of maximizing available funds to enhance student achievement through sound business practices and financial responsibility.
